Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Christ, after he was crucified on Golgotha three days before.

This holiday is always celebrated on Sunday. In Serbia it is mostly a sunday in april.

And since it is march I think that it is right time to speak about Easter traditions in Serbia.

So here are things you schould know when calabrating Easter in Serbia.

Painting eggs red tradition

The day before Easter people in Serbia paint eggs in red, this color symbolises blood that Jusus Christ shed for people.

There are many mathodes for coloring eggs, the simpliest is probably, with food color. You can also put stickers on colored eggs.

The mathode my mother uses is healthier and it also remindes me of my childehood.

For this mathode you need black onion skin, eggs, water some older tights and scissors.

What I also like about this mathode is that you can cook eggs with flowers and leaf, they leave beutyful yellow trace on the eggs.

Easter day

On the Easter day there is an big meal with different kind of dishes.

Mostly there are like 5 different dishes.

People meet up with family, and they beat each other with eggs.

When beating eggs in Serbia, the person beating says “Hristos vaskrse” (Christ is risen)
And the other person says “Vaistinu Vaskrse”(Truly is risen)

Way of celebrating is simular to chatolic Easter.

End of Easter Lent

Also Easter is least day of Easter Lent, wich lasted 40 days.

In these 40 days orthodox christians were not allowed to eat all products that come from or are made of animals (except fish and sea food in some cases)
