Food is a very important part of a culture.
It can reflect on the way people have eaten in the past.
And not only that, tasty food makes people feel more welcomed and happy.
And Serbia is known for being a very welcoming country.
So here are some foods that you can find in Serbia and (generally in the Balkans).
1.Ajvar
A long time ago, before modern times and supermarkets,
Serbian grandmas and mothers used to cook Ajvar at the end of summer and beginning of autumn and put it in jars. So there is something to eat during the winter.
This traditional dish is made of: paprika, blue eggplant, onion and tomato.
You can eat it as a main dish, with bread.
Or you can eat it as a side dish with meat.

2. Pljeskavica
A Pljeskavica is a schnitzel similar to a burger.
Although someone might think, “What is so special about it, is it just a burger?”
But I can say, and I can talk to everyone who’s ever tried Pljeskavica, that it is at least 10 times better and healthier than a hamburger at McDonald’s.
Pljeskavica is a dish made of ground meat grilled.
In (more serious)restaurants, it is mostly served with kajmak, onions and ajvar.
But I would also recommend you to try one at some street food restaurants, where you can add whatever topic they offer.

3.Cevapi
Cevapi is a dish made from minced meat, shaped into small rolls and grilled.
It can be served with kajmak, ajvar and onions.

4. Kardadzordzeva Snitcla
So this is my personal favorite.
It is Serbian traditional schitzel. It is like salami and cheese rolled in meat.
It is served mostly with potatoes and Greek salad.

5. Sarma
Sarma was originally a Turkish dish, but it is also famous in the Balkans and Serbia!
It is made with cabbage, meat and rice.
